Gut Health and Hydration

Did you know, that by the time you’re thirsty, you’re already slightly dehydrated?

Hydration is one of the most important factors for improving digestion and promoting a healthy gut because it is vital for the elimination of waste and toxins from the body.

Staying hydrated helps to keep your stools soft, regulates bowel movements, prevents constipation and aids in the break down of foods in combination with stomach acids and enzymes.

To help move food through your system, the body will utilise any available fluids it can, so if there isn’t enough fluid to keep the food moving, the food will either get stuck or slow down, which causes constipation or bloating.

Fluid requirements for adults generally range from 1.5 to 3 litres per day. Herbal teas and fluid from food like soups and smoothies also contribute to this, along with the water we drink.  But remember, it’s best to drink water regularly throughout the day, rather than all at once.

Dehydration Symptoms & Causes
Your urine is a great indicator of your hydration level.  If you are well hydrated, your urine will be colourless or a very pale yellow.  As you become dehydrated, your urine turns a darker golden shade. So, if your urine is dark, you definitely need to drink more water!

Dehydration can also cause headaches that often result in dull pain in different areas of the forehead, temples or back of the neck. These headaches are different from a sinus or congestion headache where you might experience facial pain or pressure.

When it comes to meeting your body’s needs for fluids, drinking water is the easiest, cheapest way to stay hydrated!

Vomiting and Diarrhoea
When it comes to vomiting and diarrhoea, dehydration is a big risk because you lose such large amounts of fluid and electrolytes.

The symptoms of dehydration can be alleviated by sipping on small amounts of an electrolyte solution like Hydralyte while you recover and get back on your feet.

Rehydrating with Hydralyte

Hydralyte is scientifically formulated to contain the correct balance of glucose and electrolytes for rapid rehydration. The formulation is based on the World Health Organisation criteria for effective rehydration. Water alone, or sugary drinks are not as effective as Hydralyte, as they do not replace electrolytes which are lost during bouts of vomiting and diarrhoea.

Compact and lightweight, Hydralyte Electrolyte powders and effervescent tablets are great for those small handbags, wallets, pockets and are a family first aid must have!

Always read the label. Use only as directed. If symptoms persist, consult your healthcare professional. If you have kidney disease or are taking blood pressure medicines, consult your doctor or pharmacist before use. Distributed by Healthcare Logistics, Auckland.
